AIM…..to add a pseudo nutritional value to the milk powder

Sri Lanka after the second world war under different regimes had deployed numerous ploys to make the country self sufficient in milk. However to date their efforts had proved futile. From the year 1970 to 1977 this exercise had become successful to a certain extent. However after the open economy was introduced in the year 1977 several entrepreneurs lost enthusiasm in the production of own milk food needs and opted to import milk powder through multinational Companies. We then depended  our needs totally on imported milk products.

The multinational companies discouraged the production of our milk to enhance the importation of milk powder. In order to be successful in their endeavours these multinational companies influenced our Government Ministers. Owners of Dairy farms, officials and heads of the Ministry of health, economic development  Authority, Custom officers and the officials of the treasury and won the hearts of all these personnel.

In addition there was terrific and gigantic advertisement campaign took place simultaneously in the print and electronic media promoting the imported milk powder. They succeeded in making an effective ’Cultural Brain Wash’ of the people in the country. It was also made known that the intake of milk powder is an essential ingredient of the people and a feeling was made to insist on the intake of imported milk food for a healthy living. The multinational companies were so strong that they were able to create a ‘Fear Psychosis’ among the people.

In addition the multinational Companies were given the maximum tax concessions and the government encouraged them with their imports. Through the advertisements that were telecast and exhibited in the print media brought in a lot of profits and income to these related institutions. The media personnel who tried to suppress information about the deficiencies in these multinational companies, those in the head chairs not allowed them to publish or telecast these unfavourable facts.

However in various countries the injurious affects of the imported milk powder surfaced. In the year 2008 if had been confirmed that 30,000 children in China had acquired kidney related deceases .They had reported six deaths during that year. The reason was confirmed as the existence of poisonous ‘melamine’. The stocks of milk food had been supplied to a subsidiary Company of Fonterra called ‘Sanlu’.
