Former beauty queen back to motherland, for her father
A former Miss Sri Lanka contestant, 25-year-old Deena Tissera is back in Sri Lanka after a long hiatus. She is here to declare open the Washington Hospital in Chilaw this week. The hospital to her is that of a memorial for her father who passed away from cancer a year ago. “It’s been tough grappling with my father’s passing, but this hospital is my and our family’s way of remembering him and for allowing his work to continue,” she said.
Deena is a final year medical student at the Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University in Scotland. She is a recipient of two prestigious awards from the Scottish Government, one for having helped out with immigration compliance and the other a bronze achievement award for her role in the One Nation campaign, a campaign which was funded by the Scottish Government.
Deena has been extensively involved in student politics at her university. She is the Vice President – International and a delegate of the National Union of Students (NUS) - Britain’s confederation of students’ unions. “The NUS has been instrumental in representing the interests of over seven million students in the UK and were even successful in getting immigration laws to be changed.”
“International students pay more than double the tuition fees as opposed to the EU students who enjoy many more benefits. Being in the position that I am, I believe I can fight for equal student rights and this is what I’ve been doing so far.”
