Ranil grabs UNP for six more years
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected leader of the United National Party (UNP) for the next six years at the party’s annual Convention held at Sirikotha yesterday.
The UNP adopted a resolution to hold the UNP leadership vote every six years. Sources said that several UNP MPs including Deputy Leader, Sajith Premadasa, Karu Jayasuriya, Dayasiri Jayasekara and Buddhika Pathirana opposed the move to hold a vote.
A total of 4978 out of 5315 members voted in favor of the extension of Wickremesinghe’s leadership while 337 voted against.
Premadasa despite opposing the proposal to grant Wickremesinghe a six year period, later pledged to support the latter if he decided to contest the next Presidential election. He added not to lease out that slot to any outsider noting that if Wickremesinghe decides to withdraw from such a competition, he would gladly step in to fill that vacuum.
