Colombo Night Races schedule curtailed
The Colombo Night Races 2012 scheduled for December 15 will see a reduced number of events due to the time factor.“We had to cut down on the number of events as it goes till dawn if all events are to be taken place,” said Shehan Tissera addressing a media briefing in Colombo. The number of events have been pruned down to 11 - 7 Motor Cars and 4 Motor Cycle events. The car events are to be conducted by Asian Motor Racing Club and the Motor Cycle events by Sri Lanka Motor Cycle.
Two new races introduced for cars are the International racing event for GT 3 and GT 4 for which already drivers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan and Hong Kong have confirmed their participation. Sri Lanka’s Dilantha Malagamuwa too is expected to compete along with them in this race. As this event is contested by almost all foreigners the organizers have also decided to run two races only for this event according to Tissera.
The other new event the ‘Toyota Etios’ has attracted drivers from India, while a few local drivers too have entered for this particular event which is new to our drivers. As last year a team from India (seven drivers) will be seen in action for the VW Polo Cup event in their VWs. Sri Lanka’s leading drivers in the calibre of Romani de Silva, Upulwan Serasinghe and Sumanapala Mannapperuma will battle along with the Indian drivers in this VW Polo Cup competition. In fact Mannapperuma will be the oldest competitor during the Colombo Night Races 2012.
Sri Lanka’s fastest racing cars in SL-GT up to 3500cc category known as the Super Car event will see 24 cars taking grid positions. This race will see all leading drivers of Sri Lanka drive to maintain their supremacy. Spectators who throng their way to see fast racing cars in Sri Lanka will get the opportunity of witnessing much faster cars on track when the International event is run with GT 3 and GT 4s for the first time especially with foreign competitors.
The Formula race will be only for McLarens 1300cc where 10 entries were received by the organizers. In this category there will be few experienced drivers and up and coming youngsters who have shown a keen interest in Formula driving are to contest. Tissera said that all motor car events will run a minimum 12 laps while higher class events will run 15 laps. This was made possible after lengthening of track to 4.5 kilometers where the drivers will be able to touch their maximum speeds whenever it is possible.
Tissera said that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure the safety of spectators. “With the extension of the track we were able to expand the spectator area too,” he said.In the Motor Cycle events too their will be a few foreigners competing. Already a few riders from Maldives have confirmed their participation in the higher class racing events.
