Sri Lanka opposition MP calls for a female women's affairs minister
Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Rosy Senanayake has called for the appointment of a female legislator as the minister in-charge of women and children's affairs.
She has made this statement in parliament during the debate on the budgetary allocations for the Women's Affairs and Child Development Ministry.
She has explained that there was nothing personal behind her statement and it was made due to the fact that a woman would be most suitable to hold such an office.
The plight of the women in the country according to surveys that have been carried out is dismal, Senanayake noted in the House.
She has pointed out that the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and International Labor Organization (ILO) have revealed there are 40,000 child prostitutes in the country.
The same studies have also revealed that there are 85,000 war widows in the country as well and that women now head 23% of the household units in the country.
