Raped and raped again
by Gihan Kamalesh Weerasinghe
A 15-year-old girl attending a leading school in Colombo was allegedly raped by her 16-year-old boyfriend, and thereafter raped again by an Afghan national, who was introduced to her by the boyfriend, according to police sources.
The boy and the Afghan national have been taken into custody, consequent to the girl's mother lodging a complaint with the Dehiwela Police.
It is revealed the girl had sat for the GCE O/L exams in 2012 and had been unsuccessful. However, she was encouraged to attend tuition classes so that she could sit the exams for the second time this year. Therefore, she was attending tuition classes held at Kawdana Road, Dehiwala.
Meanwhile, sources said there is some confusion as to the whereabouts of the girl's father. Some say he is dead, while some others say he is in the Middle East. At the inquiry, the girl had said she cannot remember her father and she had never experienced any love from her parents.
The background
The girl has two siblings but they are in poor health; therefore, her mother had to focus more on them, leaving her to fend for herself. Since there was no man in the family, the mother and the children had to depend on their relatives who reportedly are affluent, to support them. A relative who owns an advertising firm is said to be financing the teenager's education and she had got the opportunity of studying in an international school.
On 26 April, at about 4:30 p.m. the teenager had left the house saying she was going to meet her friends. But she was actually meeting her boyfriend whom she had met while studying in the international school, the boy is said to be from Wellawatte had attended the same tuition class. He too had failed in his GCE O/L exam.
When they met that evening, two friends of her boyfriend had joined them as well, from Wellawatte.
They had taken a three-wheeler from Wellawatte to Dehiwela. The foursome had then walked to a restaurant near the beach and had ordered soft drinks. The boyfriend had already planned on taking advantage of the girl, and he had mixed some alcohol with the soft drink she had ordered. As it was getting late, the two friends had left the girl and her boyfriend, by which time the girl had been drowsy as her drink had been laced with alcohol.
While the teenager was reportedly struggling to stay awake, her boyfriend had escorted her to the beach and had made her walk for a while. He had thereafter made her sit on a rock, and had proceeded to have sex with her.
Unable to think clearly
Realizing what had happened to her, she had pleaded with her boyfriend not to take her home, and had wanted to stay the night with him. "Now I can't go home. I want to be with you tonight," she had said. Having no choice, her boyfriend had acceded to her request, while at the same time considering ways of leaving her in view of the predicament he had put the girl in. He had then remembered a certain club in Colpetty and had decided to take the girl there. By this time it was nearly 11.00 p.m. and they had boarded a bus to take them to Colpetty.
Once they had reached the club, they had started chatting and had more drinks when an Afghan national, a civil engineer by profession, had walked in. As the story unfolds, the Afghan had said that he had come to Sri Lanka about two weeks back to meet a dental surgeon engaging in private practice. Having befriended the Afghan national, the young couple had started to discuss their problems with him.
After a while, the Afghan had said he was staying at a hotel close by with his wife and children and the young couple could stay there for the night.
The boy meanwhile had thought that the Afghan engineer who had said he was 52 years, appeared to be like a father, and had asked the girl to go with him. Reportedly, at that stage the girl was not able to think clearly as she had consumed a fair amount of alcohol. When her boyfriend had asked her to go with the Afghan, she had agreed, while he had stayed back at the club.
By now it was nearly 2.00 a.m., and the engineer had taken her to a hotel on Kirimandala Mawatha, Nawala. He had no wife or children, as he had said. In fact, he was alone. That night, he had allegedly raped the teenage girl.
The following morning, the Afghan had taken her to a shopping complex in Bambalapitiya, where her boyfriend had met them. According to the police, the boyfriend had pre-planned the meeting. The girl had thereafter left the shopping complex with her boyfriend and had returned home, having extracted a promise from him that her family will not be informed of what had happened the previous night.
Meanwhile, the girl's mother had lodged a complaint with the Dehiwela Police that her daughter had not returned home the previous night after having told her that she was going to meet up with some friends. The mother had also said in her statement that her daughter's mobile phone had been switched off, and that she was worried, wondering if anything untoward had happened to her daughter.
Not knowing what had taken place in her absence, the girl had calmly walked into her house only to be grabbed by her mother and taken to the Dehiwela Police station.
On being grilled by the police on where she had been the previous night, the girl had revealed what had happened from the time she left her home the previous day, including be raped by her boyfriend and the Afghan national. As she is a minor, the police had promptly taken action to apprehend her boyfriend and the Afghan national.
OIC Dehiwela, Chief Inspector Senaka Ratwatta, and SI (Crimes), Upul Weerasinghe, are conducting further investigations instructed by DIG Greater Colombo, Sumith Edirisinghe, SP, Mount Lavinia Police Division Ravindra Karawita and ASP Devapriya Jayasinghe.
