He said that a special discussion on this was held between his Ministry and airport officials last week.
Airport and Aviation services Deputy Chairman Kamal Ratwatte said that the electricity bill at the Katunayake airport comes to Rs. 80 million a month, Mattala – Rs. 10 million and the Ratmalana domestic airport – Rs. 1.5 million.
With the electricity tariffs being increased the bill at all three airports is also expected to go up.
A Cabinet paper had been submitted on an earlier occasion as well seeking concessions on the rates charged for electricity used at the Katunayake and Ratmalana airports but the request was rejected. Meanwhile he also said that a Cabinet paper is to be submitted seeking concessions on electricity used at Sri Lanka’s three main airports.
Air Arabia has already suspended flights to Mattala but Jayaratne says discussions are underway with Fly Dubai and Emirates on operating from the new airport.
