Trauma Forced Woman to Cut Off Husband’s Penis, Lawyer Says
CALIFORNIA – “She had a break from reality”.
This was what the legal counsel for a woman, charged with cutting the penis of her estranged husband, told the court the night when the attack occurred.
According to the defense attorney Frank Bittar, during the closing arguments Thursday, “she’s a shattered woman who attempted to do the best that she could.”
However, Bittar said Catherine Kieu’s mental condition increased and she broke down, according to the City News Service.
The jury is set to start deliberating on Monday on charges of aggravated mayhem and torture for the July 11, 2011 incident when the 50-year old Kieu was accused of drugging her husband, severing his penis, and throwing it in the trash can.
According to Bittar, no one could condone what Kieu went through, but he said Kieu had a childhood full of abuses and molestation including other trauma in the war-ravaged Vietnam.
Bittar said that was made worse by her husband, who constantly demanded sex in ways that pained her. Kieu’s husband is going only by his first name and is not being identified by The Associated Press because of the nature of the attack.
The prosecuting panel, in its closing arguments, baree Kieu was overwhelmed by jealousy and anger after her husband demanded for a divorce and started seeing a former girlfriend.
Kieu’s 60-year old husband, who was not able to have his penis reattached, graphically described the attack in court and testified that it fel like he bas been murdered. The accused could be meted with life sentence without the possibility of parole if convicted.
