A 300-year old wall clock worth Rs. 5.2 million used by Former Finance Minister Ronnie De Mel at his Geekyana Watte bungalow and a 6 ½ foot tall chimney lamp that had been stolen  were recovered from two scrap metal dealers in Thebuwana, police said.

The robbers who had broken in to the Geekiyana Watte Bungalow had stolen the clock which is partially made of gold and sold it to a scrap metal dealer for Rs.8,000.

The lamp was also discovered from another scrap metal dealer.

Police arrested four people including a scrap metal dealer over the robbery.

The former Finance Minister had prepared several budget speeches at this Geekiyana Watte residence which was initially owned by British national George Elphinstone.

It was believed that the stolen clock which was in working condition even at the time of the robbery, was gifted to the former minister by the British Royal Family. In 1962 the clock was estimated at Rs. 6.2 million.

These two items were handed over to the Thebuwana Police yesterday.
