Four arrested over murdering newborn baby
The infant murder had taken place in the village of Savipura last night while the woman was admitted to the Puttalam District Hospital with heavy hemorrhaging, reporter said.
Doctors had discovered that she had given birth and proceeded to notify the police.
Officer from the Puttalam Police Station questioned the woman at the hospital and uncovered details of the incident.
The woman had been preparing to travel abroad for employment when she had given birth to a child at home. A neighboring woman who had arranged for her foreign employment and who had also assisted in delivering the baby, wrapped the infant in a towel and dumped it in a nearby toilet pit, the mother told police.
Acting on this information, police recovered the infant’s body and proceeded to arrest the woman who was directly involved in the murder along with the husband and mother of the suspect, who is receiving treatment at the Puttalam Hospital under police protection.
The magistrate’s inquiry on the infant’s body is to be carried out today.
