Over 100 shops demolished in Sri Lankan capital for city development project
Sri Lanka's Urban Development Authority (UDA) demolished over 100 shops along a busy street in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo today to pave the way for a city development project.
The authorities removed the shops along the Bastian Street which stretches from Colombo Pettah to Fort bordering the main long distance private bus stand.
The owners of the shops have been ordered to remove the shops prior to the demolition and disgruntled stall owners were seen protesting the orders. Police and armed forces provided security for the demolition.
With the demolition the roadside opens to beautiful Beira Lake and the sources say the government plans to clean the lake and start a swan boat service for fun riders there.
Bastian Street, which is a major bus road in the city will be widened, sources say.
The capital city is undergoing an expedited development under the direction of the UDA and Ministry of Defence and Urban Development to attract the local as well as foreign tourists.
The development of Bastian Street is carried out under the Colombo City Beautification Project.
