Rajapaksa satellite to cost US$ 360M – Ranil
“The United National Party (UNP) will form 161 battalions during its annual Convention on 1 December to oust the Rajapaksa regime. The statement by the UNP on 1 December over the radical changes to be made with regard to bringing back the party to power will highlight the plans to form a just and equitable society entrenched with democratic rights,” UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Wednesday.
Addressing party members at a meeting organized by Provincial Councillors, M.S. M. Fairoos and Mujibhur Rahuman , Wickremesinghe said “We intend to put for approval both these concepts at our party convention on 1 December. From that point onwards, we are going to start our march towards victory. The government may try to undermine our victorious march. There might be Trojan horses within our party ranks to undermine us. Let us move forward as one single force. We will set in place our youth, women and UNP branch offices to bolster our march forward. We must boot out the corrupt Rajapaksa regime and set up our own government in place soon.”
He also said, “The people are burdened with the escalating cost of living. The UNP thought that the government would grant people some relief through the budget. But the people have been given Lamborghinis instead of bringing down the cost of living. Now we have Lamborghini racing cars, Supreme Sat satellites which the poor ordinary people never asked for.”
“Everything is super fine now. We have got low commodity prices. Now we have only to get into our Lamborghinis to drive to the supermarkets to buy the foodstuff, milk foods, vegetables, fruits, bread etc. at dirt cheap prices. Apart from those thrilling moments we have Lamborghini night motor car races planned for the 14 and 15 December,” Wickremesinghe said adding, “Our party general secretary had told the Parliament yesterday that the Rajapaksa satellite would cost US$ 360 million. A certain person rang me this morning and told me that the entire exercise would cost not US $360 million but US $450 million. Who will pay for this satellite? It is the working class of the country. These unwanted expenses are paid by the tax revenues collected from the poor people.”
He also said, “There is no option other than having a UNP Government. Only the UNP can lock horns with this corrupt government. We must march towards forming an equitable society that can bolster up democratic rights of the people.”
The UNP General Secretary, Tissa Attanayake, expressed his amazement at the turn out of women party cadres of the UNP in such large numbers. “The presence of women in such large numbers do not augur well for this repressive government headed by Rajapaksa,” he said.
The President of the Colombo District UNP Parliamentarians’ Group, Ravi Karunanayake said, “this insensitive government instead of providing concessions to the people has granted tax concessions for the import of racing cars such as go-karts and Lamborghinis.
What is the price of a bag of cement? Because of the excessive prices of building materials nowadays, the poor labourers and masons are facing unemployment. No government so far has presented a repressive budget like this.”
