Sugathadasa stadium closed for repairs
The newly laid track at the Sugathadasa Stadium is to be closed for repairs and many events had to be postponed, while some event organizers have changed the venues. The track which was laid only three months ago and was used for the Asian Youth Athletic Championships was due to undergo these repairs when the technical officer detected a few damages on the track.
The matter was forwarded to the foreign constructors by the local constructors and they said that it was not an issue to be alarmed about as there were only very small damages that could be done in a short period of time.
Due to closing of the stadium the Relay Carnival organized by the Sri Lanka Athletic Association that was to be held here on Sepember 7, 8 and 9 has been shifted to Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Diyagama. It will be held on September 14, 15 and 16.
It was said that the damages caused were on the parts of the area where the field events are held and these will be attended during repairs. The Ministry of Sports had stopped the balance payment of Rs. 30m tothe foreign constructors until the repairs are completed.
