Achala yet to receive electronic arm

The government has failed to honour its promise to provide an electronic arm to law student, Achala Priyadarshani, who lost her arm due to medical negligence, Ceylon Today learns.
Achala said although a number of promises were made when she was receiving treatment at the hospital, none of those promises bore fruit.

“I am studying for my final year examination. I have realized that most of the pledges were given only to appease me.However, I will continue my studies and I extend my gratitude to all the people who helped me,” she said.
Achala, whose left arm was injured in an accident on 17 January at her home, was admitted to the Matara Hospital.
Later, she was transferred to the National Hospital, Colombo and there her arm was amputated.

A four-member committee, appointed by Secretary to the Ministry of Health, Dr. Nihal Jayatilake, revealed that Achala’s arm had to be amputated due to negligence of the medical staff at the Matara Hospital. It is also said charge sheets were filed against 21 officials, including doctors and nursing officers, at the hospital.
The government pledged to provide Achala with an electronic arm, which costs Rs 5 million, but the promise is yet to be fulfilled despite more than four months have lapsed after her arm was amputated.
Speaking further, Achala said nobody has provided her information as to when and how she is going to receive an electronic arm.

“The latest thing I got to know is the measurements of my arm have been sent to Germany to get an estimate for the cost. Although it is said that it was approved by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and I will be given the opportunity to meet him, it has not been done so far. However, I still keep my hopes alive about an electronic arm,” she added.
