Samsung developing brain control tools for smartphones and tablets
Touch-based input is cool but what’s even better is mind control. Just imagine the possibilities of just thinking about an app to fire-it up. That’s exactly what Samsung along with the University of Texas’ assistant professor of electrical engineering Roozbeh Jafari is working on. Once completed, the system would allow users to don a cap filled with EEG electrodes to control apps and everything else on the phone/tablet’s screen.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet is used in the prototype setting, allowing users to open an app and make selections from a menu by concentrating on an icon blinking at a certain frequency.
At the moment, it takes some 45 minutes to set up the cap, and the electrodes still requires a sticky gel to apply. The current success rate is 80%-95% with a selection made every 5 seconds.
Pretty impressive and we’re sure we’ll be hearing more on this in the months to come. It’s impressive how fast technology is evolving, helping everyone along the way, including those who have a handicap. Powerful stuff, I would say…
