SupremeSat Satellite orbiting in ‘Chinese orbital slot’
The Sino-Lanka SupremeSat satellite, which was launched in Xi Chang – China on the 27 of November 2012 is orbiting in the ‘Chinese orbital slot’ without any interruptions or technical difficulties and is being monitored by China’s state owned Greatwall Industry Corporation.
SupremeSat Group CEO, Vijith Peiris, told Ceylon Today SupremeSat which is a 100% private venture is at present utilizing the Chinese Orbital Slot as the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission’s (TRC) approval for the Sri Lankan Orbital Slot is pending.
The CEO, however, said the TRC approval matter is not needed urgently as they are expecting to begin beaming in June and the Chinese are setting resetting and making necessary adjustments in preparation for commercial operations scheduled to start in June. “It is after June we would plan the next stage,” he said revealing Sri Lanka will have its own state-of –the –art satellite ground station in Pallekele as they have obtained the approval for it. He also added that the Group has applied to secure the ‘Sri Lankan Orbital Slot’, which is 50 Degrees East. The USD 320 million Investment Project for the next four years has already seen US $ 100 million comitmentin the first phase. The SupremeSat’s life span is about 20 years and it would be ready to offer Direct To Home (DTH) services at a reasonable rate for TV users, not only Sri Lankans, but also the South Asian region. “When we are ready with our own ground station in Pallekele, the Chinese experts will give adequate training and input to our local employees, who we intend to recruit,” he said and added, “The Chinese will also market DTH service to their clients, as it’s a collaborated project.”
