Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras will be set inside all private buses in the country before 31 March 2013, National Transport Commission (NTC) said.

Chairman of NTC, Roshan Gunawardane, said Minister of Private Transport Services, C.B. Ratnayake, instructed them to set cameras inside the buses, in order to reduce the inconveniences experienced by the commuters.

“We have received report of many inconveniences encountered by the passengers inside the buses. Violence against women, not giving balance money to passengers, not offering seats to differently-abled persons, pregnant women and for clergy, are few of those. The camera system will be set up inside the buses, in a bid to identify such inconveniences and take action against the bus operators, who are responsible for them,” he said.

Initially, the cameras will be set up inside inter-provincial buses, which come under the purview of the NTC. With the support of the Provincial Road and Passenger Transport Authorities, the NTC is taking steps to set up cameras in short distance buses as well, Gunawardane said.

He added, setting up a camera inside a bus, would cost approximately Rs 50,000 and the NTC will bear two-thirds of the cost.

“Initially, the NTC will bear the entire cost of setting up cameras inside buses. The bus owners only need to pay one-third of the cost thereafter. Even to pay back that amount to the NTC, we give them a year,” he said.

He pointed out a special control room will be set up at the NTC, to receive data from the CCTV cameras via GPRS technology.
