Trinitian Randika Alwis to lead Sri Lanka Rugby at Youth Asiad
Current Trinity College Kandy crack second rower Randika Alwis will lead the Sri Lanka Youth Rugby team at the next weeks Junior Rugby Asiad which will be worked off in Colombo at Havelock Park. National selectors headed by Chandrishan Perera, Nazeem Mohamed, Sajith Mallikarachchi and Pradeep Basnayake (all of whom have donned the national jersey) initially named an outfit of 35 players and have now brought down the number to 24 along with 6 stand bys and were named yesterday subject to approval of the Ministry of Sports. This was disclosed to ‘Daily Mirror’ by the Secretary of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) Rizly Illyas.
Randika Alwis will have Isipathana number 8 Arun Kumar as his deputy. Sri Lanka will lock horns with Singapore on September 12 and will feature in another game on the final day on 15 September. If Sri Lanka becomes champions they will get a chance of playing along with some top sides in Asia such as Japan, Korea and Hong Kong in division I in 2013.
Randika Alwis will join an elite band of fellow Trinitians in Ikram Odayar, Rajiva Aluwihare, Haris Omar and Murad Ramzeen all of whom have had the distinction of leading the Under 20 national outfit at the Youth Asiad.
