Customs seize over Rs. 9m in cigarettes

The Revenue Task Force of the Customs yesterday seized 370,000 sticks of cigarettes, valued at over Rs. 9 million, brought to the country as personal cargo with the aid of fraudulent documents.
Customs sources said the stock was seized by RTF officers from the premises of a cargo clearing agency in Peliyagoda which exclusively deals in cargo sent by migrant workers.
"The documents had been produced with false names and addresses and the goods concealed as floor tiles to mislead the Customs," an officer said.Customs sources said that the stock of cigarettes were brought down from from a Middle Eastern country.
Investigations are continuing in this regard under the directions of Director General Jagath Wijeweera, RTF Director Mali Piyasena, Deputy Directors Siripala Edirimanne, J Chandraratne. Suprintendent's Parakrama Basnayake, Wasantha Randeniya, S.K.Tickson , G,Ghanaraj, J.S.Jayakody and a team of officers.
