Customs sleuths yesterday arrested two Sri Lankan males at the Bandaranaike International Airport, for attempting to smuggle gold bars valued at around Rs.5 million, out of the country. In one incident, they had detected four gold bars weighing 452 grams (Rs.2.26 million) concealed in the false bottom of the hand luggage of a 43 year old male from Colombo, who was trying to board a flight to Singapore.
The detection was made by Airport authorities who had later called on the Customs Sleuths.
Customs spokesman Lesley Gamini said they had also stopped another person who was trying to board a flight to Chenni with six gold bars weighing 550 grams (2.75 million) hidden inside his rectum. "The gold was recovered by Customs officers following a body search of the 58-year-old man, a resident of Kalmunai" Gamini added.
According to the Customs spokesman, there has been an increase in attempts to smuggle gold overseas, especially to India in recent times where gold prices has seen a sharp increase.
Customs officials are investigating the twin incidents.
