Mobitel launches 4G-LTE network

Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel  said its 4G-LTE service went live in the cities of Colombo, Hambantota, Matara, Galle, Kalutara, Kandy and Jaffna yesterday.
The trial of Mobitel’s 4G-LTE network in May 2011 exhibited downlink speeds exceeding 96 Mbps, which was also incidentally the first time in the South Asian Region.
The latest in wireless network technology, a 4G-LTE network means customers are able to access the internet at much faster speeds than those experienced with 3G. To enjoy 4G-LTE speeds, customers must use supporting mobile phones, dongles or routers.
 With these superior speeds, customers can experience faster download speeds, smooth HD video streaming, superior online gaming and much more.
Enterprises and SMEs will also benefit from Mobitel’s 4G-LTE network due to its reliability and higher average speeds experienced while catering to many customers. Using supported 4G-LTE WiFi routers, corporate customers can cater to their business data needs more cost effectively.

1.What is 4G or LTE?

4G is the “Fourth Generation” standard for mobile network technology and LTE stands for “Long Term Evolution”. It is a radio access technology to deliver very high speeds with low latency compared to other technologies.

2. What is the difference between GPRS, EDGE, 3G, 3.75G and 4G?

•GPRS: This is a 2.5G network service that provides data speeds up to 56kbps (similar to dial-up speeds)

•EDGE: This is also known as 2.75G technology, which is  an enhancement of the 2.5G technology which provides up to 120 Kbps higher data transfer rates compared to GPRS (the default is on 2G).

•WCDMA/HSPA: This is 3G technology that provides up to 14.4 Mbps faster / higher data transfer rates compared to the 2G technology (EDGE & GPRS).

•HSPA+/DC-HSPA+ : This is 3.75G technology that provides  up to 42 Mbps faster / higher data transfer rates compared to the 3G network (WCDMA & HSPA).

•LTE: This is a 4G technology that provides higher data transfer rates compared to the 3.75 networks (HSPA+/DC-HSPA+). In addition to the speed improvements low latency, high data rates can be experienced.

-Yes, it’s available

20. Currently I have activated the DC HSPA Plus service, if so how can I change it to a LTE service?

-You need to be on a Mega Internet Plan and do a SIM change to an USIM and a LTE supported device to enjoy the LTE 4G service. Note you need not disconnect the service as the DC service is given FOC for Mega Internet Plans.

21. Currently I have activated the DC HSPA Plus service on a post-paid broadband package which does not fall under the Mega Internet Plan, if so how can I change it to a LTE service?

-You need to do an IMSI change to an USIM and a LTE supported device to enjoy the LTE 4G service. However you can enjoy the LTE facility in a LTE supported Smart Phone only.
-If you don’t disconnect the DC service a Rs. 1000/- will be charged and you can enjoy the DC service both while using any DC supported device.
-Note, you are better off to do a package change to a Mega Internet Plan and enjoy both the LTE and DC service FOC with a higher data bundle.


22. What is the APN to use in 4G LTE Network?

-You can use the APN ‘mobitel’ and enjoy LTE service.
