Sri Lanka recommences train services in a section of the Northern Railway
Sri Lanka on Tuesday recommenced train services on a section of the Island’s Northern railway line which was destroyed during the three decade armed conflict.
Accordingly, the section between Medawachchiya and Madhu which spans across 43 km’s which completed reconstruction work recently was opened for train services.
The journey, first in over two decades started from Anuradhapura railway station at 9.30 am and proceeded towards Madhu Road.
The train has reached Madhu Road at 11.00 hours to be greeted by a large gathering.
The Medawachchiya and Madhu section has been reconstructed by India’s Ircon International Limited as a part of the Indian government’s assistance to revive the Northern railway track.
The Government of India has extended its support to the Government of Sri Lanka to rebuild the 252 km long rail track under the US$ 800 million credit line.
The railway tracks from Omanthai to Kankesanthurai and Medawachchiya to Talaimannar has been completely destroyed during the devastating civil war in Sri Lanka, which came to an end in 2009.
Minister’s Basil Rajapaksa, Kumara Welgama, Douglas Devananda, Rishad Bathiudeen, Deputy Minister of Transport Rohana Dissanayake, Indian High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha, General Manager of the Sri Lanka Railways B. A. P. Ariyaratne, General Manager of India’s Ircon S. L. Gupta, Chairman of the India’s Ircon Mohan Tiwari and several other high ranking officials took part in yesterday’s event.
