Minister Champika hits out at Pavithra
Former Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka today hit out at Pavithra Wanniarachchi who currently holds the post saying that he had not made any proposal to increase electricity tariffs last year when he was the minister
He was referring to a statement made by Ms Wanniarachchi who had hinted that Mr Ranawaka was responsible for proposing the increase‘I challenge anybody to prove or submit any written document submitted by me to the President or the cabinet suggesting an increase of the tariffs last year’, Mr Ranawaka said in a statement.
He said it was the Secretary of the Finance Ministry who had written to his Ministry secretary that since the furnace oil prices had increased that the tariffs should be adjusted.
Mr Ranawaka said that in a letter addressed to the President by him he had objected to the increase .
Quoting from the letter he said that the Finance Ministry Secretar y had proposed a 100 per cent increase of those using less than 90 units and that he had pointed out that it was against the principles of the government of providing electricity at affordable prices to the poor.
He said he had pointed out that the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation had suffered losses not due to the increase of fuel prices internationally, but due to the drought condition and depreciation of rupee.
He said that he was willing to debate the issue.
