Rs 100 note below standards

The United National Party (UNP) yesterday claimed the Rs 100 currency notes printed by a firm in Latin America to be substandard, and demanded details of the transaction.

Addressing the media, UNP Colombo District Parliamentarian, Ravi Karunanayake, said the transaction had been allegedly done through an agent in England and queried as to who gained a commission from it.

Karunanayake said the responsibility of printing currency notes lies with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) and therefore, the CBSL should give an answer as to why some of the Rs 100 notes are of low quality.

He said, although the CBSL has an agreement with a private company in Sri Lanka, to print currency notes, the substandard notes, which almost appear as fake notes, were in fact printed in Latin America.

Displaying four Rs 100 notes, Karunanayake said the four notes are of four different qualities, although all notes are supposed to be of the same quality.
