Lanka protests with UK
The Sri Lankan government had lodged a formal protest with Britain over the announcement that a bond will be imposed on Sri Lankans visiting Britain, the External Affairs Ministry said.
External Affairs Ministry Secretary Karunatillaka Amaunugama said that the protest was lodged through the British High Commission in Colombo.
He said that the British High Commission had however clarified that the bond will apply only to high risk travelers and not all Sri Lankans.
As a result the matter has now been settled, the External Affairs Ministry said.
The UK Government has plans to impose 3,000 pounds as travel bonds on the citizens of six countries, among them Nigeria, Ghana, Bangladesh, Sri-Lanka, Pakistan and India.
British Home Secretary Theresa May said the move is part of the next step in making sure the UK immigration system is more selective, bringing down net migration from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands, while still welcoming the brightest and the best to Britain.
