DIG Vass Gunawardena arrested
A businessman in Bambalapitiya Mohamed Siyam was abducted and killed. In this connection DIG Colombo North Vass Gunawardena had been interrogated and then arrested by the officials of the department of the Criminal Investigation unit.
The businessman had been abducted on the 22nd May and his dead body had been found in the Dompe area. After conducting investigations a Sub Inspector of police attached to the Peliyagoda Police station coming under the purview of the DIG Office Lakmini Bamunusinghe along with three other police constables were arrested on the 6th of this month.
At that time DIG Colombo North Vass Gunawardena had been abroad on an official seminar had returned only on the 9th.He too had been interrogated by the CID and arrested. He had been questioned for about five hours .Again on the following day he had been further questioned.
The deceased is M.M.Mohamed Siyam is a father of three children and had lived at Sagara Road, in Bambalapiyiya. He has associated with even a number of Ministers and Members of Parliament. He had been engaged in a footwear business importing accessories of shoes he has had a partner by name of Ghouse Deen who had been indebted to Siyam by a large sum and his intention had been to own the business by capturing it from Siyam by doing underhand work.
It had revealed that Ghouse Deen had taken Siyam to a hotel for dinner .Although Siyam had said that he dropped hin at his house in Bambalapitiya after dinner, but he was missing since he left his house on that evening. From the day Siyam was missing, the 22ndMay his motor vehicle was abandoned at Nugegoda Kandewatta road and it is at date is at the Mirihana Police station. The vehicle was brought to the Mirihana Police station on the 23rd may and no one knew it was Syam’s vehicle. Later it was confirmed as that of Siyam’s from the Motor Traffic department.
. On the 30th Ghouse was taken into custody and questioned. He had admitted that he had planned the abduction and the murder for a contract of Rs 30 lakhs. An underworld from Pettah by name ’Chutte’ who is a friend of many police officers had been given the contract by a businessman in Pettah and he had been arrested on the 30th.He had confirmed that the contract had been for Rs 30 lakhs.
It is learnt that it had been a contract and the money was supposed to be divided amongst some police officers.
