Colombo to be a green city
Colombo is being transformed into one of the cleanest greenest cities in the region, the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development said.
The Ministry said that the city was an eyesore a few years ago but is now fast becoming a place full of open, people friendly, green areas and modern public facilities.
The old Viharamahadevi Park in the heart of Colombo is being beautified for a cost of Rs. 700 million and reconstruction work is fast nearing completion.
Work is expected to be complete in October this year. The upgraded facilities would include a cycling track, walkway, leisure area and modern sanitary facilities. The park will be open 24 hours a day and all measures will be taken to ensure the safety and security of the visitors.
In addition authorities have also taken steps to renovate the Colombo Municipal Council building. The ‘Town Hall’ as it is popularly known is a landmark building that was built during the colonial times. Special care is taken to preserve and maintain the original Roman architectural designs of the building. Work on this historic building is scheduled to be completed by August this year.
Relaying and renovation of the city roads namely CWW Kannangara Mawatha, FR Senanayaka Mw, Anagarika Dharmapala Mw, and Nelumpokuna Mw will also be over by the same period.
