Three people have died in the last two weeks due to being infected by the Influenza A virus, and there is a risk of it spreading in more areas across the country, Media Spokesman of the Ministry of Health cautioned.

There are no particular areas or districts which are at a high risk of the virus spreading; it could be found anywhere in the country, he said, adding that pregnant women and children below two years are at high risk of being infected by the virus, as their immune system is low. He advised anyone with a fever, cough or cold for more than a day to seek immediate medical treatment at a government hospital.

“If pregnant women and little children have a fever, cough and cold for more than one day, they need to go to a state hospital and seek medical attention. The Ministry of Health has provided all necessary medicines to treat patients so affected,” the spokesman added. Two patients who were being treated at the Castle Street Hospital for Women died due to the Influenza A virus on 23 April and another pregnant woman had also died due to the same virus in Monaragala.
