‘Mahasen’ may affect Sri Lanka
The Inter-monsoonal depression in the South-East Bay of Bengal is to prevail until the end of this month, according to the Meteorological Department.
Speaking to The Nation, Duty Meteorologist, Channa Rodrigo said that the tropical Cyclone Mahasen, intensified by the aforementioned depression will cause thunder showers in many areas of the island, including Colombo, Galle, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces.

“Naval and fishing communities in the South-Eastern areas have been particularly warned about the condition prevalent as of now, hence to refrain from their activities in sea area beyond 900km from the East Coast,” he said yesterday evening.
Adding, he also noted, “Under the influence of the system fairly strong South-westerly winds can be expected over Sri Lanka and neighborhood”. The prevailing weather will change gradually into occasional showers towards the end of May, he observed.
Meanwhile, the New Delhi based Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RSMC) said ‘Mahasen’ would become severe by Monday, and move northwestwards before re-curving towards the Bangladesh- Myanmar coast.

The Indian media reported that the low-pressure area over Southeast Bay of Bengal had intensified twice on Friday night becoming a deep depression.
It was reported the system could intensify by two more levels to become a severe cyclonic storm. Experts said that this was expected to happen by Tuesday.
Reports indicated that the storm could move towards Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts, before re-curving on its path and heading into Myanmar-Bangladesh coast.
