Bus unions unite for pre-paid card system
by Umesh Moramudali
Despite on-going disputes with the Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association (LPBOA), the All Island Private Bus Owners' Federation (AIPBOF) yesterday extended support to implement a pre-paid card system for private buses. The card system is a project initiated by the LPBOA, together with the Western Province Passenger Transport Board.
According to sources, the system will be implemented on one bus route in the Western Province as a pilot project and then gradually introduced to all the other bus routes.
General Secretary of the AIPBOF, Anjana Priyanjith, told Ceylon Today the introduction of the pre-paid card system would help develop private transport system which is in a very bad shape at present.
However, AIPBOF had earlier raised concerns about the pre-paid card system, saying there are some issues regarding the transparency of the project.
On 21 May, LPBOA stayed away from the strike action launched by the AIPBOF, which led to AIPBOF alleging that the LPBOA had betrayed the bus owners.
