London marathon: Lankan 14th out of 35,000 runners
Sri Lanka’s Anuradha Indrajith Cooray did his country proud when he was placed 14th, in a time of 02:17:53, at the London Marathon, which was held yesterday. A record 36,000 runners competed.
Prior to the event, Cooray was quoted as having said that his aim was to be placed among the first 20.
Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia won the race in 2:06:03.
Cooray, 33, won gold in the marathon at the SAF games in Pakistan in 2004.
Before he switched to the marathon, he was a 5,000 and 10,000-metre runner.
He is Sri Lanka’s national record holder in the men’s marathon and 10,000 metres. He took to athletics as a 5000-metre runner at Divulapitiya Central College and then joined the Sri Lanka Army in 1999.
Cooray reached his peak at the 2004 South Asian Games in Islamabad, April 2004, where he clocked two hours, 16 minutes, 36 seconds to secure the gold medal.
He currently lives in Buckinghamshire, and is a member of the Vale of Aylesbury Athletic Club.
Cooray represented Sri Lanka at the 2012 London Olympics. (Russ)
