HSBC Colombo Fashion Week 2013
Day 02
By Shabna Cader
So, day two of Colombo Fashion Week kicked off with ease and also a bit of a delay but who’s checking right? The previous night’s line-up of designers gave quite a good start to the show and there was plenty of buzz around the venue with the hopes of the second show being just as good. It didn’t really live up to the expectations but on the whole was an ‘alright’ line-up of designers.
The first two designers’ collections walked down the catwalk with not much oomph but the third, by Ramona Oshini certainly struck gold. Hers was a carefully conceptualized design collection and one that got plenty of attention from the attendees. As always, her designs were light and flowy, beautiful clothing for every and any occasion. Simple embellishments, prints and laces were added to certain outfits to give it a touch of glam and it certainly did the trick. Inspiration was said to have been driven from the ehala flower that is yellow in hue, and therefore the entire collection was a beautiful summery selection.
Newbie Amilani Perera showed a great deal of talent and fashionable spunk with her debut collection of designs. As a designer that has had prior experience in taking part in fashion shows like the Sri Lanka Design Festival, she showcased a collection that was individualistic and bold. The structures of each design were near perfect and the use of bold colours was a daring move. Third time showing and also 2011’s recipient of the GenNext Award, Dimuthu Sahabandu made equally bold statements with his collection this year. Stepping away from the usual colour range of navy blues, sunny yellows and nudes, the selection of colours gold, royal purple and dusk were dramatic and striking. Sticking to his signature style of drapes, gathered waistlines and sensuality, the designs were well received and appreciated.
Deneth Piumakshi has made a name for herself in the city of Paris and showcased at the fashion week for the second consecutive time. Known for designs that include the traditional cheeththa print, this year’s selection was a combination of handloom and European classical styles. The shoes and accessories that included the head wear, earrings, bracelets and bags were also her creations.
Suit Supply was a much-hyped collection of designs by Sri Lankan born Nishantha de Gruiter. The Amsterdam menswear brand is sleek and stylish and at the same time appeals to men of every age. The collection showcased included suits, pants and shirts that suited individualistic physique and personal trends. Bangladeshi designer Ashiku Rahman Pony was by far the best amongst the show’s international designers. His designs were a blend of contemporary and traditional styles with the use of fabrics like silk, cotton and muslin.
Highlights of day two were captured by fashion photographer Pamod Nilru.
