Drunk drivers beware
The Police Department has imported 40,000 balloons to enable them to better monitor drunken driving with breathalyser tests during the festive season.
A highly placed official at the Police Department said police officers could not nab drunken drivers in the past few months due to the scarcity of the balloons. On an average, around 35,000 drunk drivers are arrested by the police, annually.
When contacted, DIG Amarasiri Senaratne of the Traffic Police Headquarters said the imported balloons will be distributed among police stations shortly, while the samples have been directed to the Government Analyst for a report.
He further said he has given instructions to all police stations to arrest drunk drivers, and to implement the law strictly, during the forthcoming festive season.
