Bikini ban for United Arab Emirates
Bundle up the bikini and stash that Speedo. Authorities in one of the seven semi-autonomous states that make up the United Arab Emirates have banned skimpy swimwear on its beaches.
Ras al-Khaimah, the northernmost emirate in the UAE, have posted warning signs on local beaches warning that 'All coast goers should commit to public morality and modest clothing'.
Speaking to local website 7 Days in Dubai, the head of public relations at Ras al-Khaimah Police denied that there was an official ban in place however.
"Beachgoers should respect the country’s traditions and culture by dressing modestly," said Major Marwan Al Mansouri, adding that while beachgoers in bikinis or swimming briefs would not be arrested, they would be removed from the beach and not be allowed to return until dressed modestly. The ban, reports Abu Dhabi-based newspaper The National, follows complaints from local families that objected to foreign swimmers baring too much flesh.
While the move could put a damper on tourism to Ras al-Khaimah ahead of the brutally hot Middle Eastern summer, it’s unlikely to spread to the more liberal Dubai.
