Colombo High Court Judge Lalith Jayasuriya yesterday granted bail to three bodyguards of UPFA Colombo District parliamentarian Duminda Silva, currently in remand custody.

The three persons given bail were Anuara Thushara de Mel, a police constable of the Ministerial Security Division, and two of Duminda Silva’s private body guards, namely, Sarath Bandara Dissnayake and W. Amila.

The quantum of bail was set at Rs. 50,000 in cash for each and two sureties of Rs. 05 lakhs each. The three suspects were arrested in connection with the murder of Bharatha Lakshaman Premachandra on October 8, 2011. Their passports were held in Court custody and they were warned not to influence witnesses who would be testifying at the murder trial. They were also ordered to report to the CID every Saturday.

The Court, however, refused bail to another private bodyguard of Duminda Silva, named Dematagoda Chaminda, following Senior State Counsel Lakmini Girihagama objecting to bail, on the grounds that the conduct of the suspect had been questionable as even previously he had been involved in other Court cases as well and was likely to influence witnesses.

The Detention period of that suspect was extended from March 23, to June 23.

Anil Silva, PC, appeared with Anuja Premarathne and Dantha Niranjana and Ravindra Silva for the suspects.
