Managing Director of the M.D. Gunasena and Company, Ananda Gunasena and his wife were stabbed by a masked intruder at their home in Kandewatte, Nugegoda yesterday morning.

The victims were admitted to a private hospital in a serious condition.

According to the Mirihana police, they were attacked on the fourth floor of their residence. Their lives might have been saved by the screams of their maid, the police said.

Mrs. Gunasena who sustained serious injuries underwent surgery and continues to be in a somewhat serious condition.

The motive for the attack has not been established and the attacker’s identity is not known. Investigations are being overseen by DIG Western Province Sumith Edirisinghe.

Till the early 1990s Gunasenas published a leading group of newspapers namely Davasa and Weekend Sun under the group company Independent Newspapers Ltd. The group continues to be a leading publishing house and owns a chain of popular bookshops around the country.
