The Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation Ministry is to undertake a project to interconnect all prisons and detention centres in Sri Lanka, to improve efficiency and share vital information.

The goal is to have instant access to information at one domain in the case of any incident anywhere in the country, such as the Welikada prison riots that took place in November last year.

They also plan to store such data of the inmates as blood groups, fingerprints and facial marks in the system.

A spokesman for the Prisons Department said the computer software for the database is already being created and a test had been carried out using data related to the Bogambara Prison inmates.

By the end of this year the Ministry plans to computerise and interconnect more than 40 prisons and detention centres in the country.

Following the Welikada riots, prison authorities have taken a number of steps to improve the efficiency, security and surveillance capabilities within prisons.
They are currently in the process of recruiting 200 prison guards and jailors, installing scanners in the prisons to prevent smuggling while also strengthening the number of intelligence officers by twofold and assembling a special unit with 300 such officers. (SD)
