Muslims across the island will celebrate Eid ul-Fitr on Sunday (17) upon sighting the new moon after the ending of the month-long fast on the holy month of Ramadan.

Therefore Minister Ranawaka has instructed the system control unit to refrain from implementing the current power cut schedule, which suspends power supply to 78 major cities including Colombo for 3 hours and 20 minutes between 8am and 6pm daily, on Sunday.

This situation will end once the Lakvijaya power plant in Puttalam is reinstated and is added to the national power grid, the ministry said adding that present power generation is below 15%.
