The government of Japan through the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has agreed to funds to purchase high tech equipment for highways.

Japan has granted approximately Rs. 1.24 billion (Japanese Yen 940 million) for purchase and installation of Variable Message Sign (VMS) systems on expressways for efficient traffic management aimed at improving traffic flow and minimizing road hazards.

The electronic traffic signs on roadways give travelers information about traffic alerts such as accidents, congestion, construction etc.

The equipment would be handed over for installation on the Southern Expressway and the Outer Circular Highway that is being constructed around the Sri Lankan capital Colombo.

The Southern Expressway opened in November 2011, is currently being extended to Matara under the second phase.

Construction work on the first phase of the Colombo Outer Circular Highway from Kottawa to Kaduwela has already commenced. (Info Dept)
