10 arrested for extortion
The Mirihana Police Special Crime Division arrested 10 persons on 15 January on charges of extorting cash and jewellery worth Rs. 283,000 by entering a house posing as officials of the Narcotics Bureau and threatening the householders with weapons. The suspects were arrested three months after the incident.
Although the compliant has been lodged with the Padukka Police on 26 October 2012, the investigations had been delayed, forcing the complainant to inform higher officials through a petition. This led to the police expediting investigations and arresting the suspects at Kaduwela. It was revealed there were three army deserters between the ages of 27-35 years from Kaduwela and Hanwella, among the suspects. Police have recovered two 'galkatas' type guns. It was also reported that the suspects had looted property from 11 houses at Wellawatta, Grandpass, Orugodawatta, Wellampitiya, Wattala and Ganemulla.
